Memory loss after a particular age is a normal sign

As we age, we can expect our brains to shift gears a little less smoothly than they did in the past. A delayed reaction or temporarily forgotten name is a perfectly normal sign of a time-tested mind. Dementia, however, is not.

The important thing to consider about the impact of memory loss on your life is the distinction between natural lapses in recall and true symptoms of dementia. Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe various degradations of brain function, and it bears repeating that it is not a normal part of ageing. “There’s a difference between losing your car keys and forgetting you’ve got a car,” Rees said.

“What we’re trying to get across to people is that if they’ve got serious concerns about their memory and it’s impacting on their everyday lives, they really ought to go see their doctors to see whether dementia or some of their medications may be the cause, or just to find out what the problem might be.”
