Fiber is present in vegetables, grains and fruits. It is not digested by the human body. The undigested content passes through large intestine where it creates stool bulk. Low Fiber Diet is recommended to individuals for various different reasons and situations.

The diet is also known as Low Residual Diet and Restricted Fiber Diet. Residue can be defined as any food that contains fiber content.

When the bowel narrows or shrinks, an individual should opt for low fiber diet to decrease inflammation. The diet is also recommended after bowel surgery or any treatment such as radiation. Treatment for gastrointestinal tract is also a situation where an individual is recommended to have this diet. When your digestive system comes back to normal condition, you can increase the intake of fiber day by day.

Details of Low Fiber Diet

The diet limits the intake of cereals, grains, vegetables and fruits. You can have milk and milk products but in a lower quantity. The digestion ability varies from person to person. Depending on your condition and level of tolerance, you may go for the below mentioned low fiber foods. You may simply quit eating those items which seem to be unfavorable for you to digest.

  • Crackers
  • Enriched white bread
  • Rolls without seeds
  • Plain pasta, macaroni, white rice and noodles
  • Cream of wheat
  • Waffles or pancakes made from refined white flour
  • Fresh juice of fruits and vegetables without pulp
  • Fruit flavored drinks
  • Flavored waters
  • Canned and cooked fruits without seeds, membranes and skins
  • Cooked and canned vegetables without skins, hulls and seeds such as tomatoes, potatoes and carrots
  • Tofu
  • Eggs
  • Fish, poultry and tender meat
  • 2tbs/day Creamy peanut butter
  • Milk, yogurt, ice cream, sour cream, cheeses and pudding
  • Oils, salad dressings, margarine and butter
  • Desserts with exclusion of seeds, raisins, coconut, nuts, seeds and grains

Foods to Exclude

  • Whole grain or whole wheat breads, pasta and cereals
  • Wild or brown rice and whole grains such as barley, oats, kasha and quinoa
  • Prune juice
  • Dried fruits
  • Raw fruits including the ones with membranes, seeds and skin such berries
  • Raw or undercooked veggies
  • Lentils, peas and dried beans
  • Coconut
  • Nuts and seeds in any food
  • Popcorn

Low Fiber Diet Plan

Breakfast

  • 1 glass of milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 slice of white toast along smooth jelly
  • Half cup of canned peaches

Snack

  • 1 cup of yogurt

Lunch

  • 1 or 2 cups of chicken noodle with lots of soup
  • Soda crackers
  • Drained tuna sandwich along mayonnaise and salad dressing on white bread
  • Canned applesauce
  • Iced tea or flavored water

Snack

  • Crackers, white toast or bread
  • 2tbs creamy peanut butter
  • Flavored water

Dinner

  • 3 ounces of lean meat, fish or poultry
  • Half cup of white rice
  • Half cup of cooked vegetables such as green beans or carrots
  • 1 white dinner roll along butter
  • Hot tea
