Lousy sperm: Congenital neutropenia found in 5 kids

A sperm donor has passed an atypical and dangerous disease, congenital neutropenia, to five children. They are born to four couples who used the same sperm bank earlier. This thought provoking story has exposed the loopholes in the testing process in such banks.

The experts of pediatric hematology and oncology at the University of Michigan did not reveal either the location of sperm bank, or the identity of the recipients. The American Society of Reproductive Medicine should have guidelines that require a full family medical history since at least three generations. Presently the guidelines say that chromosome screening is not necessary when the family history free from potential hereditary disorders.
