Avian flu has been confirmed in two more southern Israel farming communities. According to Israeli officials, this brings to six the number of such sites. Poultry growers’ associations demand that the government declare the outbreak of the natural disaster, and allow additional compensation to farmers.
Leaving thousands of people without a livelihood, bird flu might cause Israel’s poultry industry to collapse, according to the associations as the Ha’aretz newspaper reported. Israeli veterinary officials confirmed the bird flu virus that has struck in southern Israel is the lethal H5N1 strain. And it may pose a danger to people who come into regular contact with the fowl.
