Is Survival Related To Cancer Blood Cells?

Cancerous cells

According to a recent study done by the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, the number of cancer cells in the body determines the survival of the patient. This study was based on finding out new therapies, other than the conventional treatments, which could hinder the circulation of these destructive cells in the blood flow.

Cancer is one of the most dreaded ailments today. It claims hundreds of human lives every minute. Cancer refers to the uncontrolled cell growth in body. The malignant cancer cells get accumulated in various parts of the body and, later, they take the shape of a tumor. This further prohibits the functioning of the vital organs of the body.

Causes of cancer

There is a systematic way of division and growth of cells in our body. Getting affected with cancer, cells replicate uncontrollably. Hence, it results in an abnormally growing mass of cells. This mass interferes with functioning of any organ it comes in contact with.

Link to survival

The study was based on the administration of the drug ‘Zytiga’ which affects the circulation of cancer cells in the blood stream. The survival of a cancer patient is related to the number of cancer cells circulating in the blood stream. In reference to the research, Zytiga reduces the count of cancer cells in the blood flow.

Hence, it could assist in determining whether a particular treatment could extend the life of a patient. According to the researcher, it could eventually help in finding treatments which could help to prolong a patient’s life. These treatments could be less expensive and less time consuming. Dr. Howard Scher, a leading cancer researcher from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, is the lead author of the research.
