India Kicks Up Mass Poultry Killing

After four cases of the deadly H5N1 bird flu strain were identified, authorities in the western Indian state of Maharashtra have begun slaughtering chickens. State’s Jalgaon district has returned positive results for the tests on poultry, officials informed.

These slaughtering operations began on Wednesday night and by now, over 3,000 birds have been slaughtered, official told the BBC. After India’s first bird flu outbreak last month, hundreds of thousands of birds were destroyed in Maharashtra, though the virus later spread to some poultry farms in neighbouring Gujarat state.
