HIV discordance increases at higher rate in Uganda

Uganda is facing increasing number of HIV discordant couples in the country. In the discordance situation, one partner has HIV infection and other has not. The other Partner, who is HIV negative, is always at the risk of HIV infection in this situation.

There are no any effectual counseling processes started until yet for those types of discordant couples to avoid infection. The HIV/Aids Sero-Behavioural Survey has revealed that there are four thousand living-together couples. Five percent among them is found to be discordant. The number of discordant couples has reached to five percent this year. It was at 4.8 percent last year.

The three percent of the couples showed HIV infection in male partner, while the women have not. In other two percent of the couples, the women have HIV infection and men have not.

There are more cohabiting couples discordant for HIV than the cohabitating couples with both infected. Most of the cohabiting couples do not know their HIV status and do not take any preventive actions.
