One year course of the drug Herceptin showed considerable benefits in serious breast cancer patients. The drug reduces the risk of return of disease by half and clearly improves survival. This study came in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The first report of it came last year at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Herceptin is now being incorporated in the treatment schedule by the doctors. It is currently approved for the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
Women with HER2 breast cancer get remarkable advantages from adding Herceptin to chemotherapy. But the new results show that women with early-stage breast cancer realize enormous benefits as well.
