Healthcare System in Lebanon

Prior to the war and the vast political instability presently faced by Lebanon, they boasted one of the most advanced health services and medical facilities within the Middle East. However, post-war, the institutions mainly catered to trauma patients and wounded soldiers. This causes the public sector to be in chaos, making room for a private sector to emerge.

Lebanon now functions on a universal healthcare system providing basic coverage to all citizens. The Lebanese folk have access to healthcare services and are not limited in choosing the physician they want. The scope of healthcare has improved in terms of geography where more and more clinics are to open up in rural areas.

Quality of Healthcare System in Lebanon

Quality of healthcare here is very well supported accreditation programs, which have been implemented to keep an eye on the quality of medical institutions over here. The medical sector comes under the authority of the Ministry of Public Health that ensures the maintenance of quality healthcare and the medicinal production units are established in the country. Currently, Lebanon as 2 JCI accredited hospitals that are both located in the capital city of Beirut.

The physicians and healthcare providers that operate in the private sector are mostly foreign trained and have vast knowledge and expertise. Furthermore, they speak a combination of French, Arabic and English making the communication barrier as low of possible.

Even though Lebanon is still making strides to improve their healthcare facilities, the war has depleted a lot of its resources and still consumes loads of time of the healthcare providers. Lebanon has the potential to become a force to be reckoned within the medical tourism world, but needs further investment and international affiliations truly to capture the global market.
