Healthcare System in Jamaica

The healthcare in Jamaica is nationalized for all citizens and legal residents at the hospitals and clinics in the region. The Ministry of Health is responsible for the delivery of health services through its government network of 23 hospitals and 350 health centers/clinics. There has recently been a strong emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention in order to decrease the mortality and morbidity rate.

Even though the idea of free healthcare in Jamaica is appealing, the healthcare system has experienced serious issues with long waiting queues. There is a growing private system of healthcare for individuals that are able to pay out-of-pocket (rich citizens and foreign patients).

Quality of Healthcare in Jamaica

There is a large discrepancy in the quality of healthcare in Jamaica in the public and private sector. The private hospitals and centers catering to the potential medical tourists operate at a very high level of quality in order to sustain the foreign paying patients. These upscale hospitals and clinics have all the facilities a quality hospital should have—experienced physicians, modern equipment and technology and state-of-the-art operating theatres.

Besides this, the quality of healthcare at the wellness centers and spa resorts have excellent quality. These resorts are still considerably cheaper than the ones in developed countries which cater to those who can afford the care and provide them with all the top-notch services.
