Healthcare System in Cuba

The comprehensive and decentralized public ‘Cuban National Healthcare System’ is the only healthcare infrastructure seen in Cuba. The funding for healthcare is provided almost exclusively by public funds. Under the public system, all Cubans are provided with free preventive and therapeutic care.

There is strict monopoly on healthcare by the public sector not allowing any private institution providing medical services to be set up. However, this has not affected the health of Cubans, who remain to have one of the highest life expectancies in the region.

Quality of Healthcare in Cuba

To gain a competitive edge in the medical tourism industry, Cuba has made a conscious effort to keep quality standards of medical facilities as high as possible. Even though Cuba has not yet attained any JCI accreditation, 100 per cent of all the institutions in the country have set up quality-check programs to provide patients with the best possible quality treatments.

Patients are attracted to Cuba for its innovative techniques of treatment—one being for Retina Pigmentosa (night blindness) which has attracted several US patients to seek out care in Cuba.
