tetanus

Tetanus is a medical problem which is also known as lockjaw. This is a preventable disease which affects the muscles and nerves of the human body. This is caused by bacteria — Clostridium tetani which is usually present in soil, manure and dust. This disease is not contagious i.e. one can’t get it from a person who has it.

This bacterium comes in the body of a human being through a deep cut. Mostly people get these cuts by a knife or a rusty nail.

Tetanus generally starts with muscle spasms in the jaw area, followed by problem in swallowing & pain in the muscles of the neck region, shoulders, or back. These painful muscular spasms can spread to the other parts of the human body.

Tetanus is a heath problem which usually occurs throughout the world but its occurrence is seen more in hot and damp climates.

Tetanus can be prevented by vaccinations. It generally occurs in patients who are not vaccinated or improperly immunized. A tetanus vaccine is generally given to kids in combination with vaccines against diphtheria and pertussis, which is generally known as DTP.

Other ways to have protection and prevention from tetanus is that if there is any wound in the body which might have feces, soil or saliva than it should be properly cleaned and also do the dressing of wound in right manner. Also treat it with antiseptic or antibacterial solution which may prevent bacteria from growing.

Doctors have important part in providing protection and prevention from tetanus by confirming that all your vaccinations are up to date and they also provide post-exposure prophylaxis if you have a wound which may cause tetanus.
