Stanley told the city council’s policy and finance committee that the balance in the city’s health insurance fund for employees and retirees, which was $7.5 million as recently as 2008, is projected to run out in March.

Stanley said the city’s hands were tied in terms of doing anything dramatic health insurance-wise next year because seven employee organizations have contracts with the city specifying that the city that year will provide single coverage at no cost to employees.

Stanley said that the city’s options are continuing the status quo and funding an unknown shortfall for 2012, which will amount to millions of dollars, or entering into immediate cost-sharing with city employees for next year, if they are willing.
