Death and long-term health problem to children with obese mother-to-be

Almost 10,000 babies born every year face a higher risk of dying or having long-term health problems because their mothers were obese during pregnancy.

In Scotland 16% of mothers-to-be are obese, according to a baby charity, which claims antenatal care is struggling to keep up with today’s lifestyle habits.

Tommy’s, which funds medical research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth, says 9,500 babies born each year are at a higher risk of dying or developing long-term health problems than those born to mothers of a healthy weight.
