Can Ibuprofen shield my Cognitive health?

ibuprofen and cognitive healthIf I ask you that, why you take Ibuprofen, then normally your reply would come like this – because I can’t bear the pain any longer. However, now you have another reason to swallow Ibuprofen, according to which use of this drug may boost brainpower, lost due to severe liver disease.

Spanish researchers claimed this, after they found common pain reliever effectively restored lost cognitive function in rats who were induced with chronic liver failure. As a result, earlier where these rats showed a decreased ability to learn a Y maze but after ibuprofen’s administration, their ability to learn the maze was surprisingly restored.

This is quite an interesting finding that has come to fore, however, what makes this finding more significant is the fact that this is the first ever study showing positive effects of an anti-inflammatory drug over cognitive function.

However, we can’t get away from the fact that there is vast stock of evidences showing Ibuprofen’s side effects over human body, which dampens the enthusiasm emanating from this study to some extent. Moreover, there are many conditions under which one is required to either avoid Ibuprofen use or take it under specialist’s guidance, for instance:-

if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.

if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal product, or dietary supplement.

if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances.

if you have a history of kidney or liver disease, diabetes, or stomach or bowel problems (eg, bleeding, perforation, ulcers)

if you have a history of swelling or fluid buildup, lupus, asthma, or growths in the nose (nasal polyps), or mouth inflammation.

if you have high blood pressure, blood disorders, bleeding or clotting problems, heart problems (eg, heart failure), or blood vessel disease, or if you are at risk for any of these diseases.

if you have poor health, dehydration or low fluid volume, or low blood sodium levels, you drink alcohol, or you have a history of alcohol abuse.
