Study links knee arthritis with lung cancer

knee arthritis linked with lung cancer

According to scientists from Italy — if anyone has the problem of arthritis in one of their knees, then it would be the first and foremost sign for developing the disease of lung cancer.

The scientists studied details of the medical records of nearly all the patients who have the problem of isolated knee arthritis and they were monitored them for nearly 6-years. They disclosed that the knee arthritis was linked in 5 patients who have the problem of lung cancer.

At time of the research nearly 6654 patients were monitored for different types of rheumatic disorders and in this 296 patients who have the problem of isolated knee arthritis were also taken in to consideration. In nearly 5 patients the problem of arthritis was found to be the early sign that warns that lung cancer might develop.

The subjects of the study were mostly in their middle age & they use to do lot of smoking throughout their life. Knee arthritis was found to be the first sign among the study subjects who developed lung cancer, which was not diagnosed at that time.

In each of these cases, the lung cancer could be cured fully by just removing the cancerous cells through surgical procedure and it was found that the patients were recovering fast and their health was quite good after monitoring them for nearly 3 years and 5 months. The problem of arthritis is completely gone forever in most of the cases after undergoing the lung cancer surgery.

Thus, it gives strong evidence or proof that these two were interconnected or they have some association to some extent.

Dr. Fabrizio Cantini of the Prato Hospital mentioned in a statement that knee arthritis is the early sign of developing lung cancer. It was found that in most of the cases knee problem occurs quite early. The lung cancer could be treated completely by removing the cancerous tissues through surgery if diagnosed in early stage of development.

Cantini suggested that the doctors should ask their patients to undergo x-ray of their chest if they do lot of smoking and also have the problem of knee arthritis.

Lung cancer can be cured if it is diagnosed in its early stage. But in more than 50 percent cases the disease is diagnosed mostly in its advance stage.

The researchers presented their recent study in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
