30-second rule for dropped down eatables

Most of the people have the tendency of picking up fallen foods if it is really tasty besides considering of any infection and all. According to previous studies if one picks up the dropped food within 5 seconds than it is safe to consume it.

Two student researchers of Connecticut College have discovered that the ‘five-second rule’ – which says that fallen eatables will be safe to consume if it remain on the floor for less than 5 seconds – should now be known as the — ’30-second rule.’

According to them people can wait for half a minute. The students studied — the five-second rule as section of their microbiology course.

For the testing Molly Goettsche and Nicole Moin took 2 food samples – slices of apple and Skittles candies. They first of all dropped the eatables on the floors of dining hall, for different time slot. Then they picked up the drooped eatables as a sample and checked it out for bacteria.

They discovered that there were no bacteria present on the dropped eatables which remained on the floor for 5, 10 or 30 seconds. The apple slices picked up the bacteria after one minute time, but Skittles showed the presence of bacteria after lying on the floors for 5 minutes.

Their finding may give some relief to those guys who don’t throw fallen foods: because it takes 30 seconds or even more for bacteria and germs to grow on the wet food.

The results of research gave evidence that the people can wait for at least 30 seconds to pick up the dropped down wet eatables and have more than a minute time to pick up the dry eatables before it become contaminated.

Goettsche said:

The five-second rule should probably be renamed. You actually have a little more time.

This recent research was done under the guidance of Anne Bernhard, who is assistant professor of biology at Connecticut College.
