Diagnosis ::
Following tests are used for the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus:
-
Fasting plasma glucose (FPG)test: This test is done 8 hrs prior to any food intake. It detects both diabetes and pre-diabetes.
-
Oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT): This test is performed after 8 hours of fasting and 2 hours after consuming a glucose-containing beverage. This test also detects diabetes and pre-diabetes.
-
Random plasma glucose test: Also called a casual plasma glucose test, which is performed to measure blood glucose regardless of being any food intake. This test diagnoses diabetes, but not pre diabetes.
Now-a-days glucometer or ‘glucose meter’ (medical device) is commonly used to determine the concentration of glucose in the blood instantly. HbA1c test: HbA1c level >7% of total hemoglobin indicates that the person is healthy or non-diabetic. Complications of diabetes can be prevented by keeping the HbA1c level below 7%. |
