Diagnosis ::

 Following tests are used for the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus:

  • Fasting plasma glucose (FPG)test: This test is done 8 hrs prior to any food intake. It detects both diabetes and pre-diabetes.

  • Oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT): This test is performed after 8 hours of fasting and 2 hours after consuming a glucose-containing beverage. This test also detects diabetes and pre-diabetes.

  • Random plasma glucose test: Also called a casual plasma glucose test, which is performed to measure blood glucose regardless of being any food intake. This test diagnoses diabetes, but not pre diabetes.

Results of FPG test   Results of OGTT test

Plasma Glucose Result (mg/dl)

Diagnosis

  2-Hour Plasma Glucose Result (mg/dl) Diagnosis
99 or below Normal   139 or below Normal
100 to 125 Pre-diabetes
(impaired fasting glucose)
  140 to 199 Pre-diabetes (impaired glucose tolerance)
126 above Diabetes*   200 or above Diabetes*

Now-a-days glucometer or ‘glucose meter’ (medical device) is commonly used to determine the concentration of glucose in the blood instantly.

HbA1c test:

HbA1c is the minor component of hemoglobin to which glucose is bound. It is also called glycosylated or glucosylated hemoglobin. HbA1c levels depend upon the concentration of blood glucose, i.e. higher the glucose concentration in blood, higher the level of HbA1c. It helps to monitor the effects of diet, exercise, and drug therapy on blood glucose levels.

HbA1c level >7% of total hemoglobin indicates that the person is healthy or non-diabetic. Complications of diabetes can be prevented by keeping the HbA1c level below 7%.
