Why is Germany failing to save its last glacier?

to save last glacier 9The Zugspitezebahn cable car operator in a bid to save the last glacier of Germany’s highest mountain, have failed with all their Herculean efforts going down the mills. To counter the effects of climate change by preventing the snow from melting away, the Zugspitze has spread giant anti-glare shields over the glacier. They do this each April after tonnes of loose snow piles upon it.

Fighting a losing battle to keep their glacier alive, it seems they could not nip the problem at the bud, i.e. reducing greenhouse gas emissions – making Germany the world’s sixth largest producer of the global warming-triggering gases.

Frank Huber, the manager of cable car and skiing operations on the 2,962-metre peak in the northern Alps said,

We’re doing all we can to preserve it as long as possible, but I’m not God and there’s only so much we can do.

I grew up with the glacier and it’s sad to think one day my children’s children won’t know what it feels or looks like.

Though, the effort of staving off the Zugspitze’s demise is considerable, did the government think on the reason behind these failures?

Is it that Germany is not doing enough, or missing out the required actions needed to cap the problem at the grassroots? – i.e. reducing the country’s greenhouse gas emission as a whole.
