Best ways to avoid pregnancy: Impregnate those moments with passion, not pregnancy

Unplanned pregnancy is often a concern for couples. Not just because it could lead to an unwanted childbirth, but as most couples have to go for abortions when they receive the conception news. It is one of the most common problems that teens over the world face today. That is exactly why knowledge regarding contraceptives and other anti-pregnancy techniques is being imparted to them on a wide basis in most countries. This piece of literature is a contribution to the mass effort of creating awareness regarding the ways to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

Diaphragm

It is one of the recommended techniques for females; it is more or less like a condom. It has a robber circumference within which is attached a translucent film. The only difference between a condom and a diaphragm is that while condoms can be bought over the counter, diaphragms have to be prescribed by a doctor. This is because diaphragms are prescribed depending on the size of the vagina. It is a good way to avoid pregnancy, but is most effective only when used with spermicides.

Oral contraceptives

A widely known and accepted method; oral contraceptives have gained a popular position in the world of female contraception methods. Oral contraceptives actually, are combinations of female hormones like estrogens and progesterone, often in different proportions. That is why it is not advisable to share pills with each other, since the percentage of hormones might be very different in both. It is a good method of course, but not a full proof method to combat pregnancy. It has to be coupled with other contraceptive methods.

Condoms

We all are familiar with this product. Made up of latex rubber, makes it impossible for sperms to pierce it. It is a considerably successful method to fight pregnancy. Many brands of condoms have spermicides at their tips. This helps to make the level of protection better fetched. There is also an added benefit of prevention from STD’s or Sexually Transmitted Diseases. The reason is that condoms prevent the direct contact between the open pore of the penis and the surrounding vaginal fluid.

Depo Provera

It is nothing but female oral contraceptives, in the form of injections. The compositions are the same; the side effects are also the same. The only difference is that while oral contraceptives have to be taken regularly, shots of Depo Provera have to be taken every three months. Like oral contraceptives, these are also accessible only after presenting authorised prescriptions. As side effects, menstrual cycles suffer. They become highly irregular, and in certain cases, stop permanently.

Implants

A not so known method of female contraception, implants resemble the action methodology of pills. The difference being that while pills display combinations of estrogens and progesterone, implants involve another hormone, named levonorgestrel. These are actually rods measuring one and a half inch in length, which are implanted under the skin by a gynaecologist. When the incision heals, the rods get completely concealed under the skin. The action of the hormone contained in them is gradual and lasts for a comparatively longer period. In most cases, the effect lasting for a period as long as three or five years. As side effects, again, menstrual cycles become highly irregular or stop totally.

IUD – Intra Uterine Device

This is the method with seemingly longest successful impact in stopping pregnancy. Although a bit complicated, this method would require a surgical hand from your gynecologist. IUD promises protection upto 99.99%. It is generally also known as copper – T and involves a plug that is inserted through the cervix into the uterine cavity. It functions by preventing the entry of sperms as well as by stopping ovulation. So it is bi-functional, performing the task of both an oral contraceptive and a condom. As discussed in an earlier section, this is the best sort of prevention that is available. This method gives a strong fight against unwanted pregnancy for almost ten years and in case you want to conceive before that, you need to get the device surgically removed from your body. The only side effect you would suffer from is that there would be frequent bleeding sessions and cramps. But then, there would be responsibility lying with you for a complete prevention as well! After every menstrual cycle, the position of the IUD device has to be checked for consistency because it rarely so happens, that it is pushed out by the pressure of the menstrual fluid.

Emergency contraception

This is more of a curative measure, rather than a preventive one. In case of unprotected sex the last night, and a confirmed ejaculation, emergency contraception comes as an immediate rescue. These are basically pills with a combination of highly active hormones. These are supposed to be taken as soon as possible and a second dose needs to be registered after a lapse of 12 or 24 hours. If at all an emergency pill is not handy at that time, a combination of estrogens and progesterone, or 3-4 oral contraceptives need to be taken instantly and the gynaecologist must be consulted for before taking any further step. However, it is important to remember one thing. As the name suggests, emergency contraceptives are supposed to be taken only in case of extreme emergency. It is not advisable to consume emergency contraceptives regularly since prolonged regular usage might result in natural abortions when pregnancy is desired.

Morning – After UID

This is basically the same method as UID. The difference is just that while UID guarantees prevention, After UID is more like an emergency contraceptive. Here too, in case of unprotected sex, a doctor might be consulted for a copper-T insertion within five days of intercourse. This is sure to prevent pregnancy. The procedure is functional even if the ejaculation occurs in the peak of the female ovulation process.
