Taiwanese diving spot deteriorates from tourism

Nature has bestowed upon us several goodies – the magnificent oceans, the green forests and amazing rocks. It is our responsibility to enjoy the things we have been given and protect them. However, the protecting part doesn’t seem to be applicable in case of the Taiwanese diving spot. With plenty of divers and tourists visiting this spot recently, litter and feces have become a problem in this particular tourist spot and little is being done to remedy the situation.

The garbage and litter problems have become so bad that once upon a time diving paradise is no longer a paradise! According to the government statistics, the visitors reached 382,908 last year. This is about 40% increase from the previous year. With the tourist boom in this island, the environmental damage has started already. The water around the island is not that clear anymore and not a whole lot of marine life exists in these waters.

The Green Island is about an hour’s drive from Taiwan’s main island. This place used to be one of the best places for diving. With the great coral reef, warm ocean current, mid off-season weather and ferry links, this place sounds like a great tourist spot to me.

With a rise in the tourist population, the family run hotels don’t really care much about the environment. They just toss out garbage wherever they can. Sometimes, the sea does turn into a garbage dump. Due to the marine pollution, fewer marine lives are seen in this part of the world. I hope something is done in order to prevent the situation. The deterioration of the great diving spot makes me sad even as I write this article.
