Solar Ivy: Photo-piezo-electricity generating panels

Solar Ivy

SMIT (Sustainably Minded Interactive Technology) does a great job in making solar panels to flutter and gleam while lending a perfect grace to your abode. The siblings, Samuel Cochran and Teresita Cochran, are almost there to introduce Solar Ivy, a thin sheet of photovoltaic panels, having piezoelectric generators on each leaf. In a way, it’s capable of generating continuous electricity since you can never dismiss the presence of either sol or the wind at a time. I mean, when sun isn’t there you can rely on the wind power.

Considering the aesthetics and usability, the lightweight Solar Ivy system has a modular design befitting the vertical walls. It’s able to generate 85 watts of solar power with a 4 x 7 foot strip. SMIT imparts a perfect mobility to the leaves and that’s why, a change in their position doesn’t mar their produce. Solar Ivy comes in two versions viz. GROW.1 and GROW.2.

First is GROW.1, composed of bricks having five solar leaves with a very elastic piezo-generator at their stem.

GROW.2 has a structural stainless steel mesh system taking care of flexibility and adaptability to most buildings. It also provides with opacity to limit the heat gain, light transmission and enhance the overall view.

However, none of these is available as of now. These are in research process and further developments, for the most part, depend on funding.
