Six women athletes who amazed all with their matchless achievements

<![CDATA[Taking initiative and that too when you happen to be the first one, takes a lot of heart. In addition, we can’t deny the fact that life as a woman has always been complicated. However, there are a few, who never let anything come between them and their dreams. Let us have a look at a few of those great women who have not only brought a good name to the females all over the world, but also paved way for the upcoming generation.   

 Althea Gibson

All the credit should officially go to the first person who paved the way for others. Long before Serena Williams, Althea Gibson (1927-2003) was the first woman who took everyone’s heart away by her skills on tennis court. Althea was the first black woman ever to win the Grand Slam in 1956. Until this time, Tennis was actually considered a game of those who had white skin. She kept astonishing everyone and won six Grand Slam singles titles. Althea got a well-deserved number 1 ranking in the world from 1957-58. (Source)

Marta

Winner of FIFA World Player of the Year, and that too not one or two but five consecutive times during 2006 and 2010, Marta Vieira da Silva has made the Brazil Women’s football team proud. A golden ball was awarded to her at the 2004 FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship. Not only this, she won both Golden ball award as the best player and the Golden Boot award as the top scorer in 2007 Women’s world cup. (Source | Image)

Dara Torres

Who says that age really matters? Meet Dara Grace Torres, a twelve-time Olympic medalist and an American former competition swimmer. At the age of 40, in 2007 she won a Gold medal in 100-meter freestyle at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. At the age of 33, Torris was the oldest member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Swim Team and won five medals at the 2000 summer Olympics. Torres happens to be the only American to compete in five Olympic Games. (Source Image)

Lottie Dod

The next female athlete on the list has truly failed the famous proverb that conveys that you can master only one skill. Lottie Dod won her first Wimbledon Ladies Championship at an age of 15, and then won the championship three more times, a feaqt only a couple of people could achieve. Lottie has also played hockey at a national level for England. In 1904, she won the British Ladies Amateur golf tournament and year 1908 brought her a silver medal in archery in Olympics at London. (Source)

Wilma not only inspired many female teenagers to take up running as their career but also made everyone aware that even a black girl could work wonders in track and field. Despite her being diagnosed with Polio, Wilma earned three Gold medals in 1960 Olympics. During 1956-1962, Wilma not only made her own special identity but opened the doors for many coming along.

Babe Didrikson Zaharias

Her extraordinary skills to master different sports like tennis, track and field, basketball, golf and baseball were quite enough to call her the world’s Greatest Woman Athlete. Babe was nicknamed after baseball great “babe Ruth.” She earned unmatched two gold medals and a silver medal in track and field at 1932 Olympics. The winner of 82 tournaments in golf could not survive against colon cancer and died in 1956 at the age of 45. (Source Image)]]>
