Simple Tips to Recycle Water in and Around Your House

Recycle Water in and Around Your House

Recycling water can have many benefits for your home as well as the environment. In addition to contributing towards healthier surroundings, recycled water can help reduce your utility bills to a great extent and can come in handy at times of drought. Here are some of the effective ways in which you can recycle water in and around your home.

Use Shower Buckets

The next time you turn on the shower and let it run until the water is warm enough, consider placing a bucket underneath it to collect all that water that goes to waste. It would take some time for the water to heat up. Therefore, placing a shower bucket would help you collect plenty of water you can repurpose elsewhere in the house.

Install Rain Barrels

Instead of using tap water to water your plants, consider using water collected in rain barrels. In addition to placing a barrel out in the open to collect rainwater, you can install a barrel right underneath the roofing gutter’s downspout so that all the water that collects on the roof can easily flow into the barrel. You can then reuse this water to water your gardens every day.

Reuse Water used for Washing Veggies and Pasta

Instead of washing your vegetables in running water, consider washing them in a colander placed over a large pot. This allows the pot to collect the water you use while washing. You can repurpose this water later on either in the garden for watering your plants or in the bathroom for flushing the toilet.

The same can be said for the water that is drained while cooking pasta. With the help of a colander, collect this hot water in a pot and allow it to cool. You can then use this water to water the garden.

Create Rain Gardens

You can easily create your very own rain garden at home with a little bit of time and effort. A rain garden would use the water in the storm drains, thereby minimizing the need to water the plants on rainy days. All you need to do is check with a local agency about diverting the water supply from a nearby storm drain to your home before it reaches the sewage system.

Collect Excess Water from Flower Pots

Flowerpots usually contain tiny holes at the bottom to let out excess water. Usually, this water would go to waste and simply run off into the ground. You can prevent this and reuse the water flowing out of these pots effectively. Place the flowerpots inside deep trays. This would allow the water to collect in the tray instead of seeping out through the holes. You can reuse the water collected in these trays to water the other plants in your garden.

Install Gray Water Systems

There are plenty of ways in which water is wasted in our homes without us even realizing it. Most of this water does not contain sewage and so, is called gray water. With a gray water system in place in the house, you can efficiently repurpose this gray water for so many other tasks. For instance, the water that flows into the washbasin while you wash your hands can be used to water the garden. The water used by your washing machine can be used to flush the toilet. You would need to get in touch with a professional to step up a gray water system. However, the time and money spent will be well worth it in the end.

Reuse Drinking Water

How many times have we emptied that half cup of water into the drain? Instead, you can use this water to feed a thirsty plant. Unsweetened drinks can also be poured onto plants in the garden. So make sure you do not leave the water even in an almost empty glass to go to waste.

Summary

Recycling water would contribute to a healthier home and a healthier environment as well. Consider these tips to recycle water in and around your house for a better, greener tomorrow.
