Singapore’s National Parks Board has proudly declared Grant Associates and Gustafson Porter as the winners of its international competition. For the competition, the participants had to design Gardens by the Bay as part of the next phase of the city’s masterplan. Grant Associates, a landscape architecture firm, created a design that they call Bay South. Bay South, located next to the Marina Bay integrated resort, will be built on 54 hectares, making it the largest garden by the Bay.

The Conservatory Complex will consist of a “Cool Moist” biome and a “Cool Dry” biome, displaying plants and flowers from the Tropical Montane (Cloud Forest) and Mediterranean environments respectively. Bay South will also incorporate the “Supertress,” exclusively designed vertical gardens with tree-like structures between 30 meters and 55 meters in height. The canopies that will illuminate with lighting and projected media at night will create a vertical display of tropical flowering climbers, epiphytes and ferns.

Gustafson Porter’s design called the Bay East will sit in the western bank of Marina Barrage. The 32 hectare sized garden will incorporate water gardens with terraces that drop down to the Bay’s edge. There is also room for a Boat House Piazza and an education center, where stories of water in nature will be narrated, along with creative and interactive information on the symbiotic relationship between plants, animals and water in an aquatic ecosystem. The first phase of both the gardens is planned to open in 2011.
