Post Natal Depression: It doesn’t just affect Women

Delivery is done, the 9 months wait is over. The little life which a mother had nursed inside her womb for the last 9 months is now finally out in this world. Life will never be the same again. There is so much of joy and happiness around; simultaneously there are so many changes in a person’s lifestyle and the body. There are too many things to deal with.

A woman has to deal with a whole lot of things like nursing the baby, pregnancy weight, pain of the surgery if it is a cesarean delivery, baby sitting the child through the night etc. Suddenly, there is no life of your own. Throughout, the nine months everyone’s focus is the pregnant mother, and suddenly the entire focus is on the baby. Not much focus is there on the mother who herself has become so weak after giving birth. But, the big question is, how all these changes affects the mother.

 

Many women are unable to handle all these changes in their life at a single point of time. In such cases, many of them go through depression. This phase is also known as Post Natal Depression. The time immediately after the birth of the baby, also changes a woman’s relationship dynamics with her spouse as well as in-laws. Irrespective of somebody else supporting the mother or not, a spouse support and co-operation is required in the next one year. If there is a good understanding and support, women can sail through this period safely or else they can get into a sea of depression. How many of the women take it, also depends on their personality.

Some people, in certain cultures are just not affected by these changes. Some women’s complete focus is on their baby and themselves irrespective of whatever is happening around them. Whatever, the life changes these people are either properly counseled and are already mentally prepared for such life altering changes. Another, reason for them to be unaffected by all these changes is a very strong support from the spouse and in extremely luckier cases family as well.

 

There is no such set way of women to deal with the changes in life post delivery. There are a whole lot factors that help the people in dealing with this time:
