Moroccan themed bedroom essentials

Moroccan style of decor is getting popular all over the globe. Morocco is the country of vibrant colors, elaborate patterns, luxurious fabrics, intricately carved furniture and bright accents. And you can create a bedroom with these elements to upgrade your private space from a mundane to exotic in a jiffy. So, here is how to create a Moroccan themed bedroom:

Walls:

First decide on the wall paint. You can choose from bold colors like purple, fuchsia, red, yellow, turquoise, electric blue etc. All the four walls could be painted in one shade. Or if that is too bold for you, then you can create an accent wall with one of these colors, keeping the paint on other three walls two shades lighter. You can also combine two colors like purple and fuchsia to create a room that would truly reflect the mood of this eclectic region.

Furniture:

Moroccan furniture are ornately carved and draped in colored leather, luxe silk and soft velvet in pulsating color combinations.

The bed generally has a carved high headboard with a detailed design and canopies in silk or sheer material in brilliant hues.

Gold embossed red and black leather pouf from Marrakesh can act as a dressing stool while a handmade, patterned silver night-stand with drawers will be the ideal mate for the elaborate bed.

An inlaid tuareg table can hold your knick-knacks while a tall mirror in cedar with geometric inlay pattern with bone will take the pride of place at your vanity counter.

Keep an inlaid or carved lounger in one corner and a wooden trunk at the feet of the bed to store your bed linens.

Fabrics:

An elaborately embroidered silk bed cover or duvet in some jewel tone will set the mood in the room. A bunch of cushion of different shapes and sizes in orange, red, purple and magenta can be bunched up on the bed. Embellish the cushions with gold tassels and ribbons.

Brocade bed covers or cushions are another option. The rich gold tone of the brocade silk will showcase the opulent artistic heritage of Morocco.

A lounger or a chair can be upholstered in velvet, brocade or mirror embroidered fabric. Elaborate pattern on silk or damask is another essential aspect of this theme.

Kilims or rugs that adorn Moroccan bedrooms are well-know everywhere. These woolen rugs, reversible and hand-knotted with elaborate geometric patterns, are made by women in Atlas mountain region and are considered an heirloom item, passed down from one generation to another.

These kilims are either spread on the bed or hung from the wall, adding a distinct character to the room.

Accessories:

A handful of flowers and some scented candles can be floated in a delicately hand-painted ceramic plate to incorporate a sensuous charm to the room.

Moroccan lamps and lanterns are rich in color and texture and are the perfect accessories that will immediately create the feel of morocco. A wrought-iron lamp with fine details and multi-colored glass danglers or a hanging glass lamp with detailed cut-work effect will give a mysterious allure to this space while an exquisitely painted tuareg urn, embellished with lead metal and a hand-painted ceramic bowls in vivacious color will extend the Moroccan theme further.

Incense sticks with strong perfume in a decanter will envelop the room with fragrance and recreate a scene out of Arabian Nights.

A hookah on a gleaming large brass tray, beautifully inlaid in red and blue motifs, will transport one to another era. The tray, if too large, can also double up as a table and rest on a wooden tree trunk.

So, for decorating a bedroom with opulent Moroccan look, bring in all the warm and bright colors into your bedroom. Garnish with Bedouin-like patterned tents, carved and chunky furniture and doors, mosaic tiles, hand-painted moorish screens or room dividers, glass lamps and metallic accents to usher in romanticism of this north African country into your bedroom.
