With the COP15 Copenhagen Climate Conference, the capital city of Demark is all over the news. Copenhagen is witnessing amazing innovations these days. Another interesting invention that was unveiled in the city was a bicycle wheel that has the potential to give riders a boost whenever required. Dubbed the ‘Copenhagen Wheel’, this brainchild of MIT students, works by using a kinetic energy recovery system.

Whenever a rider applies brakes, kinetic energy is realized. Therefore, the Copenhagen Wheel making use of a kinetic energy recovery system captures the energy for later use. Hybrid cars, like the Toyota Prius, also use the technology that harvests otherwise wasted energy when a cyclist brakes or speeds down a hill. The wheel hub has a battery residing in it where all the energy generated is stored.

This innovating wheel can be exchanged with any bike’s rear wheel and dive riders a boost. It come jam packed with other stunning features like an odometer, a sensor to track air quality, and a GPS. The Copenhagen wheel comes equipped with onboard sensors that monitor bike speed, distance traveled, direction, pollution levels, and proximity of friends on the road. All this data is collected by the sensors is sent via Bluetooth to the rider’s iPhone, which can be mounted on the handlebars for easy access. The wheel is expected to go into production next year and will retail for between $500 and $1,000.
