How to protect your baby from the damaging effects of the sun

Are you worried about protecting your little one from the harmful effects of the ultraviolet rays of the sun? Here are a few preventive measures that could help you prepare your baby in fighting against the potential hazards of the sunlight:

Stay Away from Direct Sunlight

A parent can provide the biggest sun protection to their child by keeping him/her away from the direct sun. Though it is not possible always, you have to try your best so that your little one does not stay under the sun for long.  If you need to take him/her out with you during sunlight hours, try to find out a shade. You can always take shelter under the shade of a tree as the chlorophyll present in its leaves will prevent the ultraviolet rays from damaging the skin of your baby.

Use Protective Clothing and Accessories

Keeping your baby covered with sun protective clothing as well as accessories will cut down your worry largely. You should always choose comfortable dresses for your baby, which have long sleeves and are made of breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Shield his/her gentle eyes with high-quality UV protection sunglasses that are exclusively intended for infants. The head of your baby should also be covered with a wide-brimmed hat. It is also recommended that you make use of an umbrella or a stroller canopy while going out of the house.

Sunscreen can be Used At Times

There are lots of parents who believe that application of mild sunscreen lotions can provide utmost protection to their babies from the sun. Well, it is not true always. Newborns should be kept away from sun-protective chemical formulas readily available in the market at least up to 6 months. The best way to save them from the damaging effects of the sun during this phase is to keep them out of the sun. After 6 months, parents can opt for certain sunscreen products (chemical-free and specially made for babies) for their kids. However, those must be exclusively made for babies and completely free from chemicals. Moreover, the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of the sunscreen lotion must be less than 30.

Focus on the News Reports

Last but not the least; keep a close eye on the news reports to know about the UV Index Value of your place. Even a cloudy sky with no bright sunlight can also take a toll on the tender skin of your baby. In this situation, watching news will help you determine whether taking him/her out of the home in a particular day will be safe or not.
