It is time to refurbish those old buildings that find no place in a world that runs after energy-efficiency and eco-friendliness. Just recently, a 1953-built skyscraper on Sixth Avenue in Pittsburgh called the Regional Enterprise Tower underwent a $3.1 million green makeover with the inclusion of 56 rooftop solar panels. Deservedly hailed as the first Downtown building to use solar panels to generate power, the green building also touts energy-efficient lighting, water-saving bathroom fixtures, and improved heating and ventilation systems.
The 31-storey building now houses the Chamber of Commerce, Visit Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Program (PUMP) and Sustainable Pittsburgh. The renovation that powers the 31st floor is supposed to compensate by savings worth $5.2 million within 15 years, says a spokesman at Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC).
