Green Energy Solutions to generate power from poultry waste

chicken waste

Green Energy Solutions, a Nevada energy developer has devised a way of dealing with animal waste from chicken farms. The company has found a way of using bird droppings in a green way to light up homes and offices across the state. It sees a bright future in converting poultry waste into methane and use the clean-burning gas as a renewable fuel to generate electricity.

Although chicken waste is found in abundance, yet it is a harmful fuel. If used by burning directly, it discharges equal amount of air as emitted by coal-burning power plant. In a hope to benefit from a 2007 state law that requires electric utilities to increase their reliance on renewable fuels, such as solar energy, poultry waste and swine waste, the company has come up with their new plan. Under the plan, Green Energy Solutions will extract methane from the waste and leave behind an odorless sludge that can be used as fertilizer.

According to its recent public filings with the N.C. Utilities Commission, the company has said it is building a power plant in South Carolina that is set to begin operating in June 2010. It is already operating a number of similar facilities in Europe and has contracts or commitments with 13 poultry farms in North Carolina to supply organic fuel. The electricity generated at the farms will be sold to an electric utility, for which it has already submitted proposals to Progress Energy and Duke Energy, as well as to ElectriCities, which represents municipal power agencies, and to GreenCo, an arm of the state’s rural electric cooperatives.
