Bearer of one of the world’s oldest civilizations is in danger. Global warming seems to spread its tentacles fast and forcefully and Egypt makes its entry, the number of nations falling under its spate increasing day by day.

Nile, the longest river in the world culminates into Mediterranean Sea via a number of distributaries that form the fan shaped Nile Delta, inhabiting millions of people because of its fertility in sustaining copious crops like wheat and rice. But, time seems to be changing rising sea level in and around the Mediterranean threatens Nile Delta, known to be Egypt’s food basket.

Because of consistent warming of the atmosphere, there has been a remarkable meltdown of glaciers all over especially at Antarctica and Greenland pushing sea levels up, thereby threatening habitations around coastal regions the most. Nile Delta lying on the Mediterranean coast is facing the same scenario, with a notable rise in Mediterranean water level, the Egyptian breadbasket is under danger of sinking.

Also, ancient monuments like temples of Karnak and Luxor, the famed Al Gizza Pyramids and the Nile valley that once was the cradle of civilization are now endangered due to rising water level at Mediterranean. Boasting of such invaluable treasures, Egypt is home to millions of tourists every year and global warming is threatening to sever the Nile Valley from its bulk of income source. If the scenario continues, it could easily and quickly wipe out sandy beaches around the Mediterranean.

Africa, which has yet not tasted the fruits of development is threatened due to climate change for others’ reckless warming of the atmosphere.

Efforts are on to protect the seashores and beaches along the Mediterranean by constructing concrete sand sea walls. This is a wake up call for us, continuously warming the environment, to stem the tide of such a devastating change in climate. Egypt is just another example, time is ripe for action.
