Ghost Forest: An artful installation awakening the world

Art has always been a way of getting your thoughts across. These days artists are seen focusing on environmental issues. Walking on the same line is Angela Palmer, an artist whose artwork the ‘Ghost Forest’ aims to encourage and provoke debate about the future of the world’s rainforests. The miraculous creation of a series of large rainforest tree stumps brought from a commercially logged tropical primary forest in Western Africa was installed at Trafalgar Square, London yesterday.

The Ghost Forest standing at Trafalgar Square for a complete week, from 16 November to 22 November will act as a symbol of endangered rainforests throughout the world. The installation is an amalgamation of nine different species of trees sourced from the Suhuma forest, Western Ghana and transported to Tilbury Docks in East London. Initial plans were to display the tree stumps upright, but the exposed roots and cleaned of soil changed the installation to lie sideways. Backed by Deutsche Bank, the project exemplifies the need to preserve rainforests by cooperative efforts globally. Nearly 11,000 delegates from 192 countries are expected to debate on the future of this planet saving treasure.

The next destination for the ghost forest is Thorvaldsens Plads, a city centre square in Copenhagen, where the installation will be exhibited from December 7-18. The UN Climate Change Conference will also be held at that time. Angela is quite aware of the carbon footprints associated with her project, but thinks it to be a small price to educate millions about impacts of deforestation on our planet.
