Ecker Architekten teamed up with students of the Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture to design and build a stunning Field Chapel. Located at the foothills of Boedigheim, Germany, the 9-meter-high structure was completely made using recycled and renewable materials, including locally sourced and sustainably harvested woods.

The amazing open-air chapel was shaped using a CNC machine to cut each piece in a manner that minimized construction waste. The chapel was made by local craftsmen or by the students using the local carpenter’s shop, and the materials that went into constructing this gorgeous destination for hikers and cyclists were locally sourced, renewable or donated.

The exterior of the structure is made from locally sourced larch wood, which is weather resistant due to its high sap content, and it will develop an attractive silver-gray sheen over a period of time. Bricks used to pave the tower platform were left over from a nearby construction project, and the gravel for the chapel’s forecourt was dredged from a nearby river. This green project took a complete year to welcome the hikers and bicyclists, who wish to get up close and personal with the beauty of nature.
