Eco Echoes: BYEE program boosts environmental awareness among youth

byee program

The Bayer Young Environmental Envoy program aims to develop young environmental leaders and boost the level of environmental awareness among young people. For this global environmental education program for the youth organized by Bayer and the United Nations Environment Programme, 50 Young Environmental Envoys are selects from around the world, giving them the opportunity to participate in a field trip to Germany to learn about trends and perspectives in the field of environmental protection and sustainability.

The BYEE program, launched in Asia in 1998 has so far seen nearly 9,500 young students apply for a place in the program and around 450 got the opportunity to visit Germany. As always, this year also more than a thousand students submitted their project proposals, but only 50 got lucky. Well, in the case of Philippines students, the challenge started at home itself. Twelve Filipino students were shortlisted, out of which the top four secured their place to become part of the study tour. The students had to submit a project proposal that would demonstrate how they can help safeguard the planet at a time of economic recession.

The fortunate four were Dandee Bitancor, a third year college student from Bicol University, Philippe Jan de la Cruz, a fourth year student from La Salle-Bacolod, fifth year student Jairus Carmela Josol of the Ateneo de Manila University and Elizabeth Lambino, a second year student from the Philippine Women’s University. In order to secure his place, Dandee designed 10-meter high and four-meter wide trellises for vegetable growing. Dubbed as the “lung wall,” the trellises will mitigate air pollution and provide an urban landscape. Where Philippe created 6,200 charcoal briquettes transforming used paper, Jairus produced local information video or communication materials on climate change for Southern Leyte. Elizabeth’s project focused on creating 100 inorganic trash bins especially for the PWU campus. She also made the symposium and eco-art competition a medium to bring about environmental awareness among students.
