DIY Lotus Seven replica runs on biodiesel

Driving a green car is a dream of many, but owing one is an expensive desire. So, in order to fulfill your craving, a DIY car could be a perfect choice. Bringing to you one such example is Jack McCormack from Kinetic Vehicles, who has transformed a 1980 Toyota Corolla wagon into a super-efficient car. His ingenious design is called the MAX (Mother’s Automotive X Prize), a practical, affordable and high-mileage two-seater, which runs on biodiesel.

MAX, a 100 MPG Lotus Seven replica, was built using a 32-horsepower three-cylinder diesel engine from Kubota, a custom-built streamlined body on a Locost chassis. But, unfortunately, the vehicle met with an accident and was rebuilt using old Toyota Corolla parts and an ample amount of custom bits and pieces. The new improved version has the capability to run on diesel, biodiesel or straight vegetable oil (SVO).

The car aimed at entering the X Prize Challenge, which did not really happen as it turned out to be a little far from the 100mpg mark set for the challenge. But Jack McCormack and Sharon Westcott won the Escape From Berkeley alternative fuel race using vegetable oil. They drove the new MAX 800 miles without burning a drop of oil and won the $5,000 prize.
