The Swiss Alpine Club has built a new mountain refuge in the Alps at an altitude of 2,883 meters near Zermatt. While it exploits solar power for 90% of its energy requirements, the remaining 10% comes from domestic cooking gas. Moreover, the futuristic-looking refuge will rely on the melting Gorner, Grenz and Mount Rose glaciers for water. Subsequently, the total carbon emissions from the shed will be three times lower than those of the others in the vicinity. It will be unveiled on Saturday.

Resembling a space station, the attractive lodge features a metallic façade and wooden interiors. It is spacious enough to accommodate 120 mountaineers. Built by 35 workers, the entire construction took more than two summers and a whopping 6.5 million Swiss francs (4.3 million Euros, 6.3 million dollars) toward its completion.
