Dealing with violence in children

violence in children

You can pick up any newspaper or a magazine from the news stand and you are sure to find news about violence among children. It may be beating someone or may also be related to the use of weapons. But one thing is common that most of these acts arise out of disappointment and things not turning the way they expected.

In simple terms you can call it a feeling of failure that the young kids are not able to accept and find violence as a way to prove themselves. This is seen even in small kids when in school; children are found pushing, hitting and bullying others for their preferences. Some researchers believe that these behaviors are learnt early in life and may also be based on life experiences.

You can help

As a parent, you surely do not want your children to land up in violent situations and endanger their lives. You can help your child by providing a secure and loving environment for your child.

  • As parents are role models, it is essential that parents refrain from using violent methods of disciplining your child. This will help them understand the importance of good behavior and respecting each other.
  • You can teach your child the ways of communicating their emotions by means of expressing. You can talk to them about their feelings and make them understand the ways of solving problems by discussing.
  • Your consistent behavior, constant love and attention will make them feel more secure and confident. You can instill the values and importance of relationships in them by setting an example and by inculcating such habits.
  • Guide your children whenever required and make them aware of appropriate behaviors for any situation. It is important to make them understand that fighting or aggression is not the way to solve conflicts and encourage them to use words and find out solutions by discussing with authorities if required.
  • Watch out for other sources that may be encouraging violent behavior. For example, the use of media, movies or friends that use inappropriate words or violent behavior. Try to avoid such situations and make attempts to limit their use of television or movies. Monitor their use of media and select educational or programs that are purely for family entertainment.
