Challenging the false sense of entitlement in kids

All want their kids to grow up soon so that they could get back to their regular life, which somewhere gets disturbed since you have to be on your toes to take care of an infant. When kids get to the age of four or five their needs start increasing. As a parent, you want your kids to have all necessities of life but problem occurs when kids demand things they do not really need. Kids are born with a feeling of entitlement, which is problematic for their parents. Here are a few simple yet effective tips to tackle the problem:

Teach them values

It is important for parents to know what values they want to inculcate in their kids. What do you want your kids to know about the real world and things like work and money to survive? Make your kids understand that people work to earn money and they would have to do the same. Tell them that to get something they have to make themselves worthy of that. Do not leave anything on their assumptions.

Don’t get friendly with your kids

Parents must understand that they cannot be friends with their kids especially in this concern. You need to be authoritative when it comes to the demands of your kids. It really does not mean that you do not listen to them but make the final decision yourself. Do not give in to all the demands of your kids since it may have harmful consequences in later life. Allow them to have things they need the most instead of everything they ask. Do not entertain their sense of entitlement, as it is harmful.

Assign them some tasks

You must ask your kids to help you in the kitchen or take them with you to shop grocery to help you shop. These little things make them learn the importance of work and earning rewards. Take the demand of having a video game for example. You can ask your kids to help you on weekends to clean their room along with you and in return, you get them a video game. It is important that kids understand that when they want something they have to earn it.

Do not set high expectations

You must not set high expectations from your kids or force them to live up to them. When kids see their parents demanding, they start taking it negatively. They start blackmailing you emotionally. They score good marks only when you agree on a condition like to get them a trendy bike. Such demands can be destructive. It is also important that you pay attention to the needs and requirements of your kids. If parents are not there when kids need them the most, they develop a narcissist behavior pattern and try to control everyone around them.

Make rules but justify them

It is important for parents to make some family rules but when kids do not understand the motive behind, they fight back. You must make your kids understand and make sure they do not have confusions regarding them. You cannot be very rigid about these rules, as it would instigate negativity. Talk about emotions attached with those rules and set good examples by following family rules along with them.

You must not give in to all demands of your kids and make them understand the value of hard work and success. Kids with a false sense of entitlement fail to understand the world in real terms. Often parents love to fulfill the demands of their kids but do not teach their kids that they have to work hard to reach their goals.
