The Broadway Mall Association (BMA), in conjunction with the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation and Susan Eley Fine Art, is organizing a public exhibition of nine monumental sculptures by the New York artist Carole Eisner. The sculptures are made from recycled steel found in local scrap yards. Carole welds the scrap steel pieces and transforms them into a heavy metal steel collage without sketching it beforehand.
Steel is remarkably malleable. I can add or subtract pieces as I create, giving each piece its own unique identity. I find two or three scraps that seem to want to be together and then develop the piece from there.
Indeed, Carole does miracles with the tarnished iron and steel rods and makes them worth exhibiting in public parks, corporate plazas, cultural centers, museums and waterfronts.
Premiering September 9 through December 8, 2009, you can see these monuments at the malls from West 62nd to West 166th Streets.
The sculptures on Broadway are:
1. Walter – at 64th Street at Dante Park, across from Lincoln Center.
2. Dali`s Moustache — at 67th Street, near the Sony /AMC theater.
3. Torque – between 75th and 76th Streets, near Fairway and Citarella.
4. Ziggurat — between 83rd and 84th Streets, opposite the Loews theater.
5. Puzzle — between 91st and 92nd Streets, near Carmine`s.
6. Dogon – between 113th and 114th Streets, at Columbia University.
7. Circus – at 137th Street, near City College.
8. Giunta – between 145th and 146th Streets.
9. Swizzle — at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital on 166th Street.
