Athenian School does its bit for the environment with three green projects

It seems the Athenian School in Danville, CA has decided to set high standards for the others to follow. The school has undertaken three eco-friendly projects to contribute in preserving the environment. All the three projects are backed by a $5,000 grant from the Oakland-based nonprofit Alliance for Climate Education.

The three projects the school is undertaking include creating biodiesel, development of an electric car and the formation of a web-based carpool system. All the projects are in their initial stages. A 17-year-old student, Maggie Rowland, is on the project under which biodiesel will be created. She obtains her clear auburn liquid that can be used in any diesel engine by mixing potassium hydroxide and methanol with the cloudy used oil that the school gets free from restaurants. The aim behind this project is to produce fuel for the buses the school uses to pick up students throughout the East Bay, for field trips and other transportation needs.
