Brown Cloud over Asia melting Himalayan glaciers

The way we are fuelling the atmosphere, it is estimated that we will be left with no glaciers, no ice sheets to cover our towering mountains in the next 50 years. And to add to the misery of the atmosphere, unwarranted pollution is amassing a cover of toxic haze, known as Asian Brown Cloud, around the troposphere, which calls for immediate attention.

Rapid pollution of the atmosphere in the form of relentless mineral exploitation, industrial smog, hasty vehicular emissions and reckless deforestation is adding extra fuel to the environment building a cloud of poisonous gases, further heating the environment. The process of global dimming caused by release of aerosol particulates cool the land as well as the sea limiting its capacity to hold sunlight resulting in local atmosphere warming. These aerosol particulates mainly found in carbon gases released by vehicles, absorb the sunlight.

A blanket of polluted cloud drapes around southern Asia, warming the atmosphere around the towering Himalayan ranges, resulting in ice loss, facilitating glacier retreat. Such a scenario is extremely alarming for south Asian countries particularly India, China, Nepal, Myanmar whose rivers accumulate their water from the Himalayas. Imagine a situation when the rivers will be deprived of water, resulting in severe drought, endangering life and property.

The drastic environment changes that we are already witnessing in the world of which Brown Cloud is a consequence, call for a rethinking on the existing developmental model and its substitution by environmental-friendly development that helps sustainable growth of the economy as well as ecology, saving the human society from natural devastation.
