Nature’s wonder: Abnormal lamb with polydactyl legs born on Canterbury farm

abnormal lam

A sheep has given birth to a unique lamb with seven legs but unluckily a portion of its bowel is missing, which will make authorities eventually destroy it. The lamb was born on Friday, July 7, on Dave and Di Callaghan’s farm.

Apart from seven legs and missing bowel part it has everything similar to a common lamb and bleats just like other siblings around her.

The formation of seven legs- polydactyl (with many legs) during pregnancy may be the result of a misprint in embryo formation during gestation period. These types of cases are very rare and occur just once in several million sheep.

Lamb’s two legs that are behind its forelegs are completely useless. It has three more rear legs and one leg is attached to the hoof. The lamb is able to walk with its two forelegs and three hind legs.

The three-day-old lamb is currently at Canterbury Vets’ Methven Dave Callaghan and is not able to pass faeces.

Canterbury Vets veterinarian Steve Williams has also diagnosed the lamb to a hermaphrodite. The vets are thinking to euthanize the animal, as they believe it would be inhumane to keep it alive with all the abnormalties.
