AS+GG proposes green design

A demonstration of sustainable, high-performance and contextually appropriate architecture will soon be the new head office building for the Federation of Korean Industries in Seoul, South Korea. Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, the mind behind this 240 metres tall tower has won an international competition for their design. The construction work for the structure that will amalgamate aesthetics with sustainability will begin this year and is scheduled to complete in 2013.

FKI’s new office building will have a multi-faceted exterior wall system that will help to reduce the internal heating and cooling loads of the tower. In addition, it gathers energy using solar panels that are installed into the spandrel areas of the southwest and northwest facades. In order to maximize the amount of heat collected, the team angles the spandrel panels 30 degrees upward toward the sun. The photovoltaic panels generate enough energy to power the electrical systems throughout the tower core and the office space.

Placed right below the spandrel panels are the vision panels that are angled 15 degrees downward toward the ground, minimizing the amount of direct sun radiation and glare. This unique combination of the alternating spandrel and vision panels boosts the tower’s aesthetics as well as the green credentials. For the project AS+GG is taking help from engineering firms Thornton Tomasetti and Environmental Systems Design and local firm Chang-Jo Architects. The structure will be one of the greenest and tallest buildings in Korea.
