8 tips to deal with toddler tantrums

Dealing with toddler’s temper tantrums can be quite a daunting task for most of the parents. They have to first identify the reasons for the outburst and then try to act accordingly to soothe the child. Almost every child comes up with his or her share of tantrums because they do not have the skills for solving problems. They also become easily frustrated. Most often you may experience such situations when they are tired, hungry, in pain or excited due to some reasons. You have to be very careful not to behave in a manner that it increases the tantrums rather than calming down. There are numerous ways in which you can deal with the same. Try to come down to their level and analyze the situation. This will certainly help to get some clues about their problem and bring back things to normal. Compiled below are some simple ways for handling toddler’s temper tantrums.

1. Frustration tantrum

When your child shows a frustration tantrum, get to his/her help immediately. For example, he/she may be struggling with a particular toy or trying to reach out for something. When he/she is not able to achieve what he/she wants, it gets frustrating. Try to acknowledge his/her frustration by using words to calm him/her down and guide him/her rightly to what he/she is trying to accomplish. Use phrases that he/she understands so that he/she remains calm. When he/she is able to do the job well praise him for accomplishing it.

2. Manipulative tantrum

The best way to handle your toddler when he/she shows a manipulative tantrum, is to ignore him as much as possible. If you try to acknowledge the same, he/she will repeat it for achieving all the things he/she wants. It is not a good idea to encourage manipulative tantrums. Make him understand that what you are doing is for his good if he/she is being destructive.

3. Dealing in public

Sometimes you may have to deal with different kinds of tantrums in public. During such occasions do not lose your temper. You must remain calm and take a few minutes to think about the best way to calm him. The first thing you have to do is to take him away from public view. Take him/her to your car or to the nearest bathroom and wait till he/she calms down. He/she should understand that he/she is going to remain there till he/she calms down. By remaining calm, most kinds of tantrums can be controlled easily.

4. Foresee the tantrums

Another way to deal with your toddler’s tantrum is by foreseeing them. If you are sure that the tantrums may erupt any moment, try to divert his attention to something else so that his focus changes to a new thing. If you feel that your child is hurt, pick him up and act accordingly.

5. Ignorance is a bliss

Many parents believe that the best way to deal with tantrums is by ignoring them. No matter where they occur, in public or private. By ignoring, some of the toddlers will realize that they are not going to get what they need and stop yelling or crying for attention. However, ignoring may not be suitable on all occasions.

6. Distracting the attention

Another simple way of dealing with the situation is to distract the attention of your child. If you distract his/her attention he/she will stop worrying about what he/she was doing and get engaged with the new toy or situation. This is very easy and can help you to control the tantrums very easily. The best thing to do is to take him/her out and go for a walk etc so that he/she sees new things around. His/her mind will be refreshed too.

7. Splash of water

One method of controlling the tantrum is by splashing a few ounces of water on your child’s face. It has a special effect on the child, puts him/her to shock for a second and then brings him/her back to normal.

8. Prevention is better than cure

If you try to identify the triggers to such behaviors you will be able to prevent the tantrums easily. Do not encourage behaviors that are not appropriate according to what the situation requires. For example, let him not cry for shopping during peculiar hours etc. On the other hand if he/she is behaving differently due to injury or sickness, then give him immediate attention.

These simple techniques come in very handy for parents while handling kids in their initial years and no one likes a crying baby all the time so deal with their tantrums easily and help them get back to normal. Always remember to have an eye on your child and see to it that he is safe and all his requirements are fulfilled. Do not let them remain hungry at all.
