10 Strategies to survive family vacation

People work round the clock throughout the year only to earn some vacation time for themselves. That is the extent to which vacations are yearned for today. In most of the people’s heads, free and relaxing time is also synonymous with quality time with family. Family time is another craved for thing in today’s world. The ideal solution therefore seems to be to put these two together and wham, you have a time bomb waiting to go off. While family vacations should ideally be that opportunity to combine two good things, these two things might not always go along well. While families can give you love, care and acceptance, vacationing with them can also give you some nightmares. So, how do you make a family vacation into the heaven that is purported to be? Read on to know 10 strategies to survive family vacation.

1. Midday transportation

Remember your busy weekday mornings, where you get up at the crack of dawn and still fight to get your kids ready on time? The same principle applies to vacations too, if only twice as bad. Remember it is vacation time for the kids too and therefore they are bound to take it easy. So, ensure that you do not have flights or trains leaving at dawn. Chances are that you will miss them and this is certainly not a good beginning to your vacation.

2. Optimally planning the places to visit

That long trek up the hill might sound like good fun to you, but if you are planning to take two kids and an older uncle with you, you have to rethink. Remember that your kids might have completely different ideas of what a vacation constitutes. Therefore, decide on places that can be enjoyed by you, your kids and any other family member that you might be taking along.

3. Your own time

Planning good places to visit does not mean that you will have to sacrifice your places of interest. You will merely have to go alone to these places. Nevertheless, this alone time can give you immense patience and peace of mind, not to mention making you less grumpy because of all that sacrificing that you will be doing.

4. Handle some tasks

You might find yourself in a pure kids vacation where your only enjoyment is to watch your kids having fun. You might be giving up a lot of work that needs to be done. In this case, keep some time aside to tackle such work. This will not only ensure that you keep some time for yourself, but also ensure that you do not end up resenting the vacation.

5. Make it healthy and fun

Vacations with family are mostly fun and there is very less health involved. Let us face it, health related activities are boring to the kids who would rather play in the beach. Incorporate the importance to health by having activities like cycling, swimming and make it competitive within and sometimes even between families.

6. Minimise use of technology

Technology has become an essential part of everyday life, however, when you are on a vacation with your family, ensure that you use it to a minimum. Instead, concentrate on spending more time with your family. This way, you will ensure that everyone stays happy, and gives you an opportunity to spend quality time with your family.

7. Fill the medicine cabinet

Children can catch sickness at the oddest of times and in the weirdest of places. It is better to carry first aid box with you rather than driving a crying child back to the hotel. This box would come in handy even to an older person and it is easier than dealing with a whining person in pain.

8. Take it easy

Vacation is synonymous with taking it easy. Do not try to push your family too much into doing fun things all the time. An occasional hour of rest will do a world of good to everyone including you. Do not make the vacation as bad and hectic as work is. Remember that an ideal vacation will never make you tired out to the point of exhaustion.

9. Record those amazing moments

Yes, it is a pain to carry that camcorder with you everywhere, but think about the memories that you are storing along the way. When you look back at the vacation you do not want to forget the way your son surfed like a pro or your daughter played with the birds, do you?

10. Relax and enjoy

A vacation is to relax and enjoy. While the best vacation is by oneself, a vacation with a family is by no means worse. If one can plan it well and take it in the right spirit, it can be even better than a solitary vacation. Remember to enjoy and completely unwind with your family. You will carry beautiful memories for a lifetime.
