Review: HTC Vivid 4.5-inch Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone

Taiwan-based handset maker HTC recently unveiled its new smartphone named HTC Vivid. This sleek and stylish phone runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and boasts of a huge 4.5 inch with excellent image quality. This phone also features 4G LTE connectivity and comes loaded with HTC Sense UI.

What is it?

The camera software used in this smartphone has more options than the software used in other smartphones available in market. This phone features standard 4:3 resolution and widescreen 16:9 as well. This phone captures excellent images because it has auto-focus and auto-enhancing technology. This phone can shoot images in sixteen different modes, including HDR and panorama. You can add effects, crop and rotate the images as well.

Released in November 2011, the dimensions of the HTC Vivid are 128.8 x 67.1 x 11.2 mm and it weighs 176.9 g. The 4.5 inch S-LCD capacitive touchscreen of this phone supports 256K colors. This phone sports a loudspeaker and a 3.5mm jack. The internal memory of this smartphone is 16GB and it can be expanded up to 32GB using microSD card. This phone features 1GB RAM. This phone supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. It also supports microUSB v2.0. The primary 8 MP camera with autofocus and dual-LED flash is present on the rear end, while the secondary 1.3 MP camera is front facing. This camera can be used for web conferencing and video chatting. The HTC Vivid runs Android OS Gingerbread and is powered by dual-core 1.2 GHz Scorpion processor. This phone features different types of sensors including accelerometer, compass and proximity. The HTC Vivid has stereo FM radio with RDS. The standard Li-Ion 1620 mAh battery used in this smartphone has a stand-by time of up to 288 hours and it offers talk time of around 5 hours. This phone supports HTML and Flash.

HTC Vivid is available for sale in the US on AT&T network for $199 with a two year contract.

The up side

HTC Vivid boasts of a huge 4.5 inch touchscreen display. This smartphone is powered by 1.2 GHz dual core processor and has an internal memory of 16GB internal storage. The 8 MP camera of this phone captures brilliant images and can record full HD video at 60fps. This phone with inbuilt GPS with A-GPS support also supports LTE and WiFi connectivity. This phone features different types of sensors including accelerometer, compass and proximity. This phone can be used for internet surfing because it supports HTML and Flash. It also supports microUSB v2.0. The rear camera of this phone can capture images in widescreen (16:9) as well as standard (4:3) resolution.

The down side

The call quality of this phone is not good, with a persistent background crackle. This heavy phone performs sluggishly. The voice dialing of this smartphone is ineffective and the AT&T LTE network coverage is not up to the mark. The battery life of five hours is not enough for a smartphone with modern facilities.

The bottomline

HTC is manufacturing several new handsets recently, including Sensation XL, Rezound, Titan and many others. The new HTC Vivid however, looks much improved and modern than these handsets and it is expected that this smartphone would allow the Taiwan-based handset maker establish its position in the rapidly expanding smartphone market. Going by the technical specifications, we can say that the Android-run Vivid with a 4.5 inch touchscreen is set to take the market by storm and will emerge as a winner in the months to come.
