iPhone has spawned a whole generation of users who are willing to forgo the tactile keypads for touch-screen functionality. Recent AT&T’s revenue figures riding on the back of iPhone 3G sales is a great illustration of the demand that exists in the market. A consumer research group, IMS Research, has carried out a survey and reported that there will be over 230 million touchscreen phones in the market in 2012. This is an increase of 200 million from the 30 million cell phones that were sold last year. This is a strong possibility considering that most of the makers are reporting great sales of their touch-screen phones; Apple reported 1 million sales of iPhone 3G within three days of its debut, similarly, Samsung’s Instinct, within one week, has become Sprint’s best selling EV-DO device till date. Femi Omoni, IMS Research analyst and report’s author attributes the surge in demand to original iPhone and terms it as a “catalyst” for generating interest in these cell phones. We believe that with a steady increase in the number of touch-screen cell phone options in the market and a subsequent fall in prices, these figures will surely swell at a great rate.
