Nokia 700 vs. Motorola Droid RAZR

Newer technology brought the whole world a lot closer to us. It gave us the freedom to communicate with anyone, from anywhere. No longer has the productivity stayed only inside closed cubicles of offices; it is more than possible to work from any other places now. The advents in technology also made our gadgets smaller, thinner and lighter than ever before. The functionalities of a desktop computer can now be accessed from our pocket handheld devices with ease. But to fit more and more functionalities in one device, manufacturers often does not have a freedom with the accessibility of their device and this is exactly where Nokia 700 and Motorola Droid RAZR are aiming to strike. With a promise of diminutive shapes and that is too without losing a single modern smartphone feature, these two handsets create a new benchmark for the phones to follow. Today we are going to review how they really fare in the real world, far from their specs and promises.

Comparison Attributes

1. Operating System

Motorola Droid RAZR is going to be packed with the popular Android Gingerbread operating system. It is the most current version of Android that is actually available on the market and one of the best smartphone operating system out there. While Google already announced the next version of their Android lineup, namely Ice Cream Sandwich, Gingerbread is no slouch and performs all the tasks dutifully and without lag. Motorola have also announced the availability of Ice Cream Sandwich on Droid RAZR in early 2012.

Nokia 700, on the other hand, runs Symbian Belle operating system which is a declining but nonetheless good OS for a smartphone. Belle took the baton from Symbian Anna and created a perfectly good environment for productivity. But Nokia’s official switch to Windows Phone this year made it difficult for Symbian to continue on its own and though a competent product, Symbian Belle is on its way to be phased out.

Winner: Though Symbian Belle has nothing wrong in terms of being a good operating system, Nokia’s lack of interest is killing the platform. Though there is handful of good apps still available on the platform, they are nothing in comparison with the growing app ecosystem of Android platform which is on its way to dethrone even iOS. So Android is the clear winner here.

2. Display

Motorola Droid RAZR uses a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Advanced display with a resolution of qHD or 960 x 540, giving a definite PPI of 256 which is pretty impressive in terms of clarity. The vibrant colours and fantastic contrast are also the traits of Super AMOLED display which makes it almost irresistible.

Nokia 700 features a 3.2 inch ClearBlack AMOLED display with a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels giving an effective PPI of 229 which is also very good. Using Nokia ClearBlack technology, the display on Nokia 700 achieved a commendable contrast ratio with solid blacks and no backlight bleeding.

Winner: Although Nokia 700 is a design driven device and Nokia billed it as the world smallest smartphone, a 3.2 inch screen is actually a bit small, considering all the competition out there. Apple clearly made the 3.5 inch size a standard with all their iPhones and Android users always have way bigger screens. Droid RAZR’s 4.3 inch screen is super sharp and people usually do not have anything to complain about. Therefore Droid RAZR takes the crown here.

3. Memory

Being one of the Android superphones that exist today, Droid RAZR is nothing less than a behemoth. It contains a whopping 1GB of RAM along with 16GB of internal storage which is also upgradeable to 48GB with the addition of microSD cards. The phone also comes with a 16 GB card included which is a nice touch.

Nokia 700 takes a modest approach here, offering only 512 MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM and 2GB of internal storage for user contents. It also features a microSD slot so upgrading the memory is not a problem.

Winner: Although 512 MB of RAM is not a downside as a well-made operating system can really use it efficiently enough to give a mind blowing performance, take iPhone 4S for example. But having only 2GB of internal memory is a downside as more and more phone are sporting a standard of 8GB. So Motorola RAZR again wins in this segment.

4. Camera

Droid RAZR has an 8 MP camera with auto focus and LED flash that works well when shooting stills. The camera also supports shooting full HD 1080p videos which is a definite plus point.

Nokia 700 contains only a 5MP camera with LED flash which does not provide auto focus. The lack of full HD video shooting is also notable.

Winner: Without farther ado, Droid RAZR comes out as the clear winner here. The specs say it for themselves.

5. Battery Life

Motorola used a standard Li-Ion 1780 mAh battery on Droid RAZR which provides a standard standby time up to 204 hours and talk time up to 12 hours and 30 minutes. On the other hand Nokia 700 used a smaller 1080 mAh battery but manages to pull a fantastic standby time of 465 hours on 2G and 450 hours on 3G. The phone also gives talk time up to 7 hours and 10 minutes on 2G and up to 4 hours and 30 minutes on 3G.

Winner: Nokia’s Symbian Belle managed to pull an impressive feat in terms of battery life even with a battery that has only around 60% capacity of the one used on Droid RAZR. But Droid RAZR battery has a considerably big capacity and more talk time on both 2G and 3G, so it takes the crown here.

Winner

The competition is quite clear at this point with Motorola Droid RAZR winning all the major points with impressive feats. It is quite clear now why the phone is considered one of the bests among modern superphones.

The Verdict

While Motorola Droid RAZR is a clear winner in all categories and also impossibly thin and light, making itself one of the irresistible phones ever made, it is also very costly with $300 starting price on a two years contract. Nokia 700 promises to give full functionalities of a smartphone in a small package and without breaking the bank and it succeeds. So if you are looking for a small and handy smartphone that will do most of your jobs without breaking a sweat but not looking for something big and brawny then Nokia 700 is your choice. On the contrary, if you are willing to pay for the latest and greatest in smartphone design and performance and Android is your choice of OS, then there is nothing to stop you from getting a Motorola Droid RAZR.
