RIM, in an effort to expand its market has launched its first clamshell phone – BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220. With T-Mobile being the exclusive carrier, Pearl Flip 8220 with its chrome finished frames and smooth shiny finish is a treat for the eyes. The phone comes with dual displays, the high-resolution exterior display for previewing e-mails, text messages and phone calls without flipping open the clamshell and a larger interior display for browsing web pages, reading e-mails and watching videos. There is a 2MP camera with flash, zoom and video recording, media player, a large QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi and UMA for voice calls over home Wi-Fi networks.
The device features Speaker Independent Voice Recognition for Voice Activated Dialing, support for MP3 ring tones, smart dialing, conference calling, speed dialing, call forwarding, voice mail attachment playback and background noise filter. Although GPS is lacking from the Pearl Flip 8220, the BlackBerry Maps with systematic driving guidance will compensate for it. It also features microSD/SDHC memory card slot for up to 16GB storage, 4 hours of talk time and 14 days of standby time. The capability of the Pearl Flip 8220 to support up to 10 e-mail accounts, edit MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint files are added advantages. We have to wait until the fall to see the Pearl.
